Hong Kong is a city that is widely known for it’s high-rise buildings, large population density and ever growing residential areas.
The Yick Fat building is a residential complex that is the combination of three large imposing apartment blocks that have been constructed very closely together.
The entire courtyard level floor is comprised of massage parlours, electronic/mechanical workshops and launderettes. As you look around the complex and look up it is obvious how cramped and claustrophobic the view is no matter what way you turn.
Some of you may recognize this piece of architecture from the movie Transformers 4, it was shot on site in Hong Kong and ended up with Michael Bay getting into a scuffle with a few of the local residents. The residents felt that the movie producers should be paying them because the filming was interfering with their businesses that were located on the bottom floor of the complex.
The property is a fantastic space to shoot some great photographs. The contrasting colours of the different apartment cubes are very photogenic and the exposed air conditioning units give the building a rustic urban feel.
It feels as though the building here is very unique and is portrayed as a symbol for densely populated areas where residents are accustomed to high-rise living quarters surrounded by other apartments of the same nature.
How to get there:
If coming from Mong Kok like I did, then you must take the red metro line from Mong Kok Station and get off at Admiralty Station. At Admiralty you need to switch to the blue line and then take the metro to Tai Koo Station.
The walk is less than 10 minutes from the metro station but if you are walking in the heat then it can be quiet a bit more challenging. The entrance to the apartment complex itself is between two shops and it has no signposts. It is a small side alley through which you should be able to see the buildings within.
