M50 stands for 50 Moganshan Road located along the Suzhou Creek within an industrial area in Shanghai. The location was formerly a Chunming Slub Mill that was operated through several different warehouses on site. During the 1990’s, the textile industry in Shanghai was downsized and this led to the closure of the mill in 1999.
Xue Song was one of the pioneering local artists that decided to rent out the disused warehouses for art purposes in 2000. Other artists soon followed Xue Song as they realized the potential for cheap creative spaces where they could showcase their artwork.
Today 50 Moganshan Road is a bustling and vibrant art space that still holds the industrial vibes of its past. It is home to over 100 galleries and art studios where both new and experienced artists tote their work. Artists are not the only professionals working in the area, many architects and photographers have also set up studios thus adding to the creative minds at work here.
I personally enjoyed wandering and exploring the different photography studios. Some of the works were impressive and some were not to my liking but I think that there is something here that everyone will like.
Even though this contemporary art space may not be in the guidebooks or tourist maps, I can assure you that if you appreciate any form of art then you need to take a few hours and explore M50. My favourite exhibition in the whole place was XMJ photography and I enjoyed many others.
The walls that line the road to M50 are covered in beautiful and sophisticated examples of street art, I also recommend taking a walk down the road to feast your eyes on the bright colours and large variations of graffiti.
How to get there:
The address is: 50 Moganshan Road (莫干山路50号), Jingan District. I took a taxi here from 1933 Shanghai which is another spot I recommend visiting nearby.
