In Seoul's Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) there is a field of flowers that will never die out. Over 20,000 LED flowers were ‘planted’ in the area outside of the buildings and many visitors flock to see the artistic display.
The flowers are the brainchild of Zaha Hadid who designed this urban attraction. The display was created for an Omega event where they were introducing their De Ville Prestige Butterfly wristwatches with an appearance from Nicole Kidman to promote the products.
During the day the flowers appear to be meticulously placed across the grassy area, it isn’t until nighttime that the flowers become something quite spectacular.
After the sun goes down, individual white lights illuminate the white petals and the green stalks lighting up the flowers. This show of beauty attracts hordes of people but fortunately you are not allowed to walk amongst the flowers so it is very easy to get a clear shot of the field.
The engineering and planning behind this garden becomes apparent when we imagine how much wiring and lighting is needed to keep all of the flowers glowing with not a single one failing.
I spent approximately an hour walking around enjoying the atmosphere and taking over a hundred photos of the flowers. If you want a photo of yourself in front of the flowers then don’t be shy to ask one of the many locals and tourists around if you are by yourself.
Note that the exhibition is open from 18th April 2015- 29th Feb 2016 but may reopen again next summer.
How to get there:
Take the metro to Dongdaemun History and Culture Park Station on lines 2,4 and 5. The metro is attached to the building so finding this location is very simple.
