Odaiba Island is home to a variety of Gundam Themed attractions that include the Gundam Statue outside Diver City shopping centre. This full size Gundam statue is the only one of its kind in the world; it is built to scale 1:1 standing at 18 metres tall.
For those of you who are wondering what Gundam is, it is an anime series that focuses on giant manned robots in a militaristic war setting within the anime world. The series is hugely popular worldwide and so the construction of this life sized Gundam figure was warmly welcomed by fans of the robot series.
The giant Gundam was constructed in 2009 for the 30th anniversary of the Gundam franchise. You are free to walk around the statue, viewing it and taking photos. During the day and late evening there is usually quite a crowd around the statue taking photos and marveling at the sight of it.
There are three other nearby Gundam attractions you can also visit. The Gundam Shop: this is located next to the statue and sells many different kinds of merchandise including many different types of model Gundam figurines and clothing items including Gundam themed t-shirts etc.
The Gundam Café sells a few food and drink items but there is more of a focus on merchandise in here too. There are no places to sit down and eat inside the “café”. Takeaway food and drink is your only option here so I recommend finding a nice place in the park on the island to sit down and relax while consuming your refreshments.
The third and final attraction is Gundam Front Tokyo and this is actually located inside the Diver City shopping centre building. This place offers the ultimate Gundam experience by showing you videos of Gundam, a look at the large collections of figurines over the years and an opportunity to take a photo with your favourite pilot. Admission fee for the Gundam front is 1000 yen for adults/Students and 800 yen for children.
How to get there:
Take the metro and get off at is Daiba Station on the Yurikamome line, from there the statue is 5-6 minutes walk, use the map below to find your way or ask any locals who are on the island. Everyone can tell you where the statue is.
